Dogs
are naturally curious, and snakes often prove to be too much of
a temptation to avoid. The unique movement and sound of rattlesnakes
paired with the devastating effects of their venom poses a serious
threat to inquisitive dogs.Venom-related
symptoms do not set in immediately after a rattlesnake bite has
occurred, so dogs do not associate the pain with the bite. Therefore,
even after a dog has been bitten, he or she rarely associates rattlesnakes
with negative consequences and no fear is established.
Rattlesnake
avoidance training is a safe, humane and proven way to help your
dog safely avoid rattlesnake encounters, lowering their probability
of being bitten. Patrick Callaghan teaches dogs in three phases
to recognize rattlesnakes by sight, sound and scent and learn to
avoid the snake and alert others to the snake's presence. During
their training session, dogs are introduced to muzzled and defanged
rattlesnakes and taught avoidance through the use of a low-level
stimulus via remote collar.
- One-on-one sessions are short and focused and Callaghan personally
instructs each dog.
- Most dogs are fully trained after one 15 minute
session. Training dates at Vintage Kennel Club are Saturday, May 16, 2009 and Sunday, May 17, 2009. The cost is $70 per dog, payable by check.
